perf-appraisal Be an authentic organization

Consider who and what you are as an organization, and what success means for you.

The worst mistake any organization can make is to say "We should be just like __" without understanding why the other organization did what they did or what it took to make it happen or to support it.

If you want to pattern your organization on someone else's success, take a good, long look at why it worked that way at the other organization. Was it a process? Was it the people? Was it the vision? Something else?

Be very cautious about trying to make your organization like another, just to reach success. I'm not saying it's not possible, but it's a really high hill to climb.

Instead, look for the attributes you want to instill in your organization. It's more realistic to set goals like "We should value agility, faster innovation, and increased collaboration between teams." That's an open organization, which is a realistic value for organizations in highly competitive industries, such as technology.

It's equally valid to go in the other direction and set a goal like "We should move slowly and deliberately, no product should be released before it is ready." That is a positive trait for organizations that operate in highly regulated industries, or where human safety could be at risk.

Be authentic to yourself. What will it take to make your organization successful? Consider who and what you are as an organization, and what success means for you. Be you, not someone else.
